Metropolitan Green Corridor
Sevilla (FUA), Spain
This large urban and peri-urban corridor crosses the area of Sevilla and connects the city to neighbouring towns. It is 68 km long, starting at the Bridge of the V Centenario it continues to five end points in the area. (Santiponce, Los Palacios, Dos Hermanas, Parque del Alamillo, Parque de La Corchuela) (Ref 1)
MFO park
Zürich, Switzerland
MFO park is one of the green infrastructures in the city of Zurich. Instead of designated space between paved streets, MFO-Park uses the structure of an old factory building as its skeleton, taking the form of a multilevel building that seamlessly fits into the surrounding structures. The basis for MFO-Park comes from an old industrial building which used to be a weapons production and testing complex. MFO has received a series of awards, including recognition as the “Most Innovative Contemporary Park or Garden”– a prestigious designation from the European Garden Heritage Network (Ref 1).
Mi Coltivo: Community Gardens in Schools
Milano, Italy
"MiColtivo, Orto a Scuola" promoted by Fondazione Riccardo Catella, aims at involving children with horticulture with the aim of educating them on the importance of a correct diet and environmental issues. The first pilot project was launched in local schools in 2012. The project was developed in the concept of the imminent EXPO 2015, as the main topics were nutrition and the environment. (1)
Micro Flowering Projects around the city
Montpellier, France
"Micro-flowering are participative urban gardening projects that allow the vegetation of streets by small plantations of annuals and perennials, vegetable and ornamental, in the municipal public space. Generally, it is a matter of developing a mineral surface on the municipal surface of the city by planting pockets. These are then maintained by the inhabitants who requested micro-flowering. Micro-flowering is a place of sharing and conviviality that allows the inhabitants to be actors of their neighborhood" (Ref. 1). In 2018, formalized 'greening permits' were launched. In this system, micro-flowering permits are requested by residents and "The municipal agents come to drill the concrete of the sidewalks and the City provides the plants" (Ref. 9 and 11).
Mill Leat Restoration, Bute Park
Cardiff, United Kingdom
Bute Park is a riverside green spot with an arboretum and gardens, containing a broad range of ecosystems supporting a wide variety of living species (ref 4). The historic Mill Leat had been dry since the 1970s."The word "leat" refers to "an open watercourse conducting water to a mill". The Mill Leat sits on the same site as a former millpond at the end of the original medieval millstream. It supplied water to corn mills located to the south of the Wst Gate and contained water well into the 1970s." (Ref 10) .Mill Leat Restoration or the re-flooding of the dry water body was a major deliverable under the Bute Park Restoration project (ref 2). In 2013 the overgrown channel was excavated, lined and refilled with water as part of the Bute Park Restoration Project (Ref 2). It enhanced the character of the park and provided a new habitat for wildlife (ref 1). Now re-flooded, Mill Leat is self-contained, self-regulating and self-circulating. It has reduced the risk of flooding and created a sustainable water feature (ref 2).
Million Trees
Auckland, New Zealand
The Million Trees project was a programme launched by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff in 2017 to plant a million predominantly native trees and shrubs over a period of three years (Ref. 1,2,3,4). It aimed to make Auckland a greener, more beautiful place while creating carbon sinks, protecting the city’s waterways and improving the city’s living environment (Ref. 2,4). The programme engaged a variety of actors in the planting activities, including local boards, iwi, schools, service and social sector groups, private entities, the council group, the New Zealand Transport Association (Ref. 1). Particularly notable partnerships included those with the Department of Corrections and the Trees that Count Trust (Ref. 2,4,6).
The initial goal was met in 2019, and the project has been renewed for 2019-2022 (Ref. 1,7).

Miraflores Park
Sevilla (FUA), Spain
A citizen initiative to transform a derelict urban area into a park. From 1987 the park's construction was left abandoned until in 1993 when over 80 citizen committees from the area organized themselves to start cleaning and reforestation activities in the park (ref 5,7). The sum of their efforts included reforestation, the creation of a community garden, and the redesign of watering systems for the park. (ref 5,6,7)
Miraflores Park Córdoba
Córdoba, Spain
“The park, inaugurated in May 2003, [was] part of a 1990s project aimed at recovering the ancient canal, combining social needs and providing a space for citizens to spend their free time.” (Ref. 7) It is located on the south bank of the Guadalquivir river (Ref. 7), and today serves as a space for “leisure, sports, and intergenerational coexistence” (Ref. 1)
Miravete Garden
Murcia, Spain
Huerto del Miravete is one of the several school gardens that have been supported by municipal, regional and national policies for environmental education on orchards. Huerto del Miravete was a two-year-long project, for the creation of a school garden and irrigation system for use by students in the elementary school system. (Ref 1)The presented intervention is an effort to introduce students to the traditional orchards of the region and the labours involved with them, and to educate on ecological processes through student participation in the garden.
Miyawaki forest at Kanakakkunnu
Trivandrum, India
This project is Kerala's first Miyawaki model urban forest developed on the premises of Kanakakkunnu Palace of Trivandrum city (1, 2). The project was initiated by the Kerala Tourism department and implemented with the help of Nature’s Green Guardian Foundation and Invis Multimedia (which also sponsored the initiative) (3). A multi-layered forest creation is targeted through the Miyawaki method, a method developed by Dr Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist. The method involves growing native plant species in close proximity to each other (3). Such urban forests are planted with the objective of creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that helps in a greater quantity of carbon dioxide absorption and purification of air (1). The project provides a wilderness experience to urban dwellers who frequent this tourism hot spot for relaxation and recreation (1, 3). After the success of this first forest project in Trivandrum, Kerala, in 2020 the Kerala Tourism launched a project to create more Miyawaki micro forests at 22 tourism spots in 12 districts across the state (Ref. 5).
