Green Living Wall of Marks & Spencer store

Newcastle, United Kingdom

Marks & Spencer transformed its Newcastle city centre store on Northumberland Street into one of the most eco-friendly in the north-east. (1) The striking development to the store includes various eco-features including the installation of a green living wall to improve the insulation of the building encourage biodiversity and improve customer experience (2, 3). The project also fits into Newcastle City Council's intention to transform Northumberland Street, and its surrounding area, into a European-leading retail destination (9)

Green Lungs of the City

Yiwu, China

The municipal government of the Yiwu city in China has launched the Green Lungs of the City Project (GLCP) in 2019. The overarching goal was to build a green lung, which will create more green spaces for residents in Yiwu, mitigate environmental pressures and improve the city's resilience to climate change. Under the project, a green corridor was created to reconnect the roads, rivers, ponds and lakes where different tree species were planted. Additionally, wetlands were constructed and restored to improve resilience against climate change disasters. The project is still in the ongoing phase, and a forest-wetland ecological park is under development in the city's central area. The GLCP aims to use different types of NBS elements to promote sustainable urban development and to provide multiple ecosystem services to the citizens in a highly urbanised area. [1]

Green My City

Toulouse, France

The Toulouse based project Green My City is a community collective focused on promoting sustainable consumption and creating a sustainable environment, (Ref. 2) It anticipates constructing thousands of square meters of organic vegetable gardens on the roofs of the city of Toulouse, saving 50 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The project defines itself as a prospective tool, which intervenes in the stream of gardening initiatives: it maps, selects, and then accompanies the initiatives (Ref. 1). The project supports the realisation of environmental initiatives by engaging citizens, communities, businesses and designers to help create an urban oasis (Ref. 23).

Green Neighbourhood Citizen Initiative and Community Garden

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The green initiative 'Oost Indisch Groen' (East Indian Green) is a citizen initiative to make the neighbourhood more sustainable, fun and healthy by means of active citizenship. The key NBS initiative is the neighbourhood garden ('Buurttuin Oost Indisch Groen') in which vegetables are grown with a community kitchen that supports social cohesion and that also gives space for an educational workshop on gardening and sustainability-related topics (1, 6,7)

Green Network Hamburg

Hamburg, Germany

While Hamburg has already had an impressive green infrastructure, it is now (since 2013) implementing an interconnected green network that will cover the 40 % of its area and support commuting by bicycle, recreation and climate change resilience. The project is planned to be completed by 2034. (Reference 9) The project aims to connect the two green belts, parks, recreational areas, cemeteries and animal habitats to each other with green paths and with the already existing “green axes” leading from the agglomeration to the urban core. The green network could not only absorb more CO2 but also prevent flooding by soaking up an increased amount of rain- and seawater caused by storms. (Reference 1, 2). An extensive network of cycle paths is also being built as part of the project. (Reference 2)

Green Park on Highway Tunnel

Utrecht, Netherlands

The Willem Alexander Park is the first roof park of Utrecht and is built on a highway tunnel (the A2 highway) and includes meeting areas, sports and activities and a community garden that contributes to social cohesion. It also allows for cultural development by creating spaces for art and culture and includes a sustainable drainage system (ref. 1, 2). In addition, the Willem Alexanderpark is the first park in which almost two hectares consists of prairie plantings (ref. 2).
The park is intersected by the roads between the City road and Leeuwenstein-North. Each segment between the roads has its own thematic program, appropriate to the size and location in the urban context. The themes are:

Green parking lot in Győr, Kuopio park

Győr, Hungary

In 2014, the planning stage of a large parking lot with an innovative green roof was started and was planned to be built on the public green space in Kuopio Park. The parking lot was planned to accommodate up to 156 cars and the green roof was planned to be 4000 square meters large. (Reference 1) The goal of implementing the green roof was to not decrease the green area of the park. However, the plan was cancelled due to concerns about the high cost. (Reference 10) In 2020, a new plan for a parking lot was introduced, which would be less costly, but will involve no green roof or green elements.

Göteborg is in need to strengthen the conditions for those who today, to a certain extent, rely on food production or farming. Also, the demand for locally produced and non-toxic food is increasing by Swedish consumers. Green Production aims to create opportunities for urban agriculture that is financially viable within and around the city. Green Production will build knowledge and conduct research by bringing together key stakeholders around a number of focus-projects within the area. The original idea regarding these focus-projects is that they either will be based in a specific spot and, for example, linking new technologies with new jobs, or involve a process where entrepreneurs meet landowners, consumers, wholesalers, etc. The goal of these focus-projects, in addition, to gather knowledge and create new contacts and networks, is that they may develop a number of innovative urban agriculture projects and business ideas in and around the city. Green railways for the city tram

Sofia, Bulgaria

Thanks to an initiative by the citizens of Sofia, called Green Rails in Sofia, grass was planted by the Municipality on a an area of newly reconstructed tram line in Sofia. The cited benefits were heat reduction, noise reduction, aesthetics, natural water retention and drainage, and lower costs of maintenance in the long term compared to grey alternatives. The grassroots initiative “Green Rails in Sofia” are determined to keep putting pressure on the local authority to continue planting grass on other parts of the tram lines. (Ref. 1; Ref. 2; Ref. 3)

Green Rainproof School Playground

Amsterdam, Netherlands

At the primary school Laterna Magica, a green rainproof playground was created that is effective in stormwater retention, reduces soil erosion, supports biodiversity and provides education possibilities for the children. The playground consists of bioswales, terraces, diverse and pollen-rich vegetation and a vegetable garden. (1,2)
