Restoration of a recreation area in Kräppladalen

Stockholm, Sweden

The project is part of the Environmental Billion project (of the City of Stockholm). The aim is to increase biodiversity, mainly linked to the landscape and also to increase the accessibility for visitors to the Kräppladalen (which is also known as Rågsved’s recreation/outdoors area) and make it more of an attractive area to visit. Also, the project aims to develop a programme and work documents that show how the purpose is to be achieved and also to perform restoration and accessibility measures in accordance with these documents. (Ref 1, 2)
Rågsved's nature reserve is the city's latest reserve and was inaugurated in 2018. It contains a mosaic of open meadows, wetlands, moist deciduous forests, deciduous environments and coniferous forests. (Ref. 7)

Restoration of "Nizza"

Frankfurt am Main, Germany

In Frankfurt, on the banks of the Main, visitors are surrounded by a breath of the Mediterranean. In the Park called "Nizza”, Mediterranean plants thrive on 4.42 hectares thanks to its south-facing position, sheltered from the wind, the favourable solar radiation and the heat storage of the Main (2).
Between 1999 and 2006, the Mediterranean park was reconstructed based on a historical model (6). The renovation project was carried out by the Green Space Office of Frankfurt according to the concept of Rainer Gesell-Schulte as part of the green development project of the inner city (1,6). The Frankfurt Green Spaces Office has been in operation since 1999 with urban qualification and refurbishment entrusted to the banks of the Main. The project aim was to transform the inner city area called Mainufer into a contiguous open space system. The project comprises many different sub-area developments that have different uses, especially on the central promenade and include green spaces, museums, sports and leisure facilities. The spatial anchor point of the project was the “Nizza” Mediterranean Park.
As part of this redevelopment, the "Nizza" was redesigned and renovated. This process included the plantation of winter-resistant Mediterranean plants and other plants with a migration background that have been delighting walkers and visitors to the Main metropolis ever since. (2).

Restoration of an urban wetland: Humedal Angachilla

Valdivia, Chile

One of Valdivia's (in South Chile) southern peripheral neighbourhoods reaches the river of Angachilla which in time led to the creation of an urban wetland, a beautiful and large urban nature reserve of the city of Valdivia. The city of Valdivia is inserted in an extensive network of rivers and coastal wetlands, which penetrate the city through estuaries, hualves and meadows. The Angachilla estuary wetland is one of the most important, connecting the southern sector of the city with the Valdivia River estuary.
These urban wetlands provide important ecosystem functions that directly benefit citizens. Since 2007, the residents of Villa Claro de Luna (neighbourhood) together with various social organisations have worked on the recovery of the Angachilla Wetland, a natural space of great ecological and social value located in the city of Valdivia. Actions included carrying out cleaning, restoration and environmental education activities to recover a place that, abandoned and without any protection from the authorities, was converted into a clandestine garbage dump. Restoration of Degraded Wetlands in Wolfschlugen

Stuttgart, Germany

The Restoration of degraded wetlands in Wolfschlugen (in the administrative district of Stuttgart) was conducted within the wider regional level of sustainable urban development to enhance resilience, protect the city from flooding, support sustainable development, and safeguard biodiversity. Ditches and craters line the 700 metres long and 50 - 70 metres wide strip of landscape northeast of the development boundary behind the Wolfschlugen forest cemetery. This is formed by the Riederwiesen, which absorb water to protect the place from flooding. The wetland should protect people at least during a so-called hundred-year flood and at the same time offer animals and plants a habitat. (ref 3, 11)

Restoration of park Zapaden

Sofia, Bulgaria

A large-scale restoration of park Zapaden over 53 hectare had started in 2017, aiming to restore the aesthetic appearance of the park, and to preserve its authentic character and value for Sofia as the second biggest park in the city. Many activities were planned, including restoration of green areas, restoration of a lake and a rock-garden (renovating the artificial lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, and adding new vegetation), and adding new flowers and greenery. In addition, renovation and creation of new grey infrastructure such as playgrounds, alleys, lighting, cameras, irrigation systems, camp grounds, and more is planned. (Ref. 1; Ref. 2)

While it is difficult to assess how much work has been completed as of 2020, recent websites (from 2018) claim: "The park has two main parts – one has alleys built in it, as well as places for leisure and the other is a forest perfect for the hotter days of the year. The green part ends at the Smardana locality where people can find a lake." (Ref. 10)

Restoration Of Rhineland Alluvial Habitats

Strasbourg, France

The Rohrschollen island, located near Strasbourg, is representative of a particular environment in Europe: the Rhine alluvial forests. These forests are known for the exuberance of their vegetation and their richness of species: it is a rare ecosystem both at the national and European level. These forests are regressing nowadays and as a result, the four major European rivers from the Alpine range (Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Po) have lost most of their riparian forests. The objective of the project is to restore a dynamic flood regime on the island of Rohrschollen that is modeled on the Rhine's hydrological rhythm (Ref. 1).

Restoration of River Medlock

Greater Manchester , United Kingdom

The Environment Agency, Manchester City Council and the Irwell Rivers Trust had undertaken works to renaturalise a section of the River Medlock running through Manchester. The project had sought to return the river to its natural state by widening the channel and replacing the Victorian brick lining with gravel that provides a more natural-looking and fish-friendly section of the river and reduces flood risk at the same time (ref. 3). The project was also being seen as an EU exemplar of how to go about restoring an urban river (ref. 1, ref. 7).

Restoration of St Inez Creek

Panaji, India

St Inez creek was an ecologically functional tidal waterbody in Panaji, Goa. Panaji has been identified as one of the most vulnerable coastal cities from floods due to the predicted sea-level rise. St Inez creek is one of the very important freshwater bodies in the city because of its cultural, social and biodiversity value. Recently, the ecological functionality of the creek was severely compromised through a combination of natural degradation and anthropogenic influences, which includes sedimentation, collapsed embankments, eutrophication, weed growth, pollution, the release of raw sewerage from neighbouring informal settlements and dumping of construction debris. The current intervention is about the restoration of the creek to conserve the urban nature and ecological systems and to increase the resilience of the city. [1, 2]

The revitalisation of the Emscher over the last 20 years marks a new phase in the region‘s history and is an impressive example of ecological and socio-economic transformation affecting all aspects of life along the river (Ref. 1).

Restoration of the Lake Rusalka

Szczecin, Poland

Lake Rusalka is one of the key elements of Kasprowicz Park, which is a popular recreational area in Szczecin. The shoreline between the Summer Theater and the Japanese Bridge is an attractive stroll. The project aims to improve the functionality, attractiveness and aesthetic value of the coastline and an island on the lake. It envisions going back to the historical tradition of the boats rental as well as includes plans for the revitalization of the part of the shoreline, creation of the Japanese gazebo on the island and construction of mooring berth [1]. In 2020, the project was still on the waiting list in the city’s participatory budget distribution. Local authorities expect its implementation to take place by 2022, the earliest [6].
