The oasis is one of the favourite destinations especially by naturalist photographers of the region, thanks to the presence of numerous animal and plant species. The oasis covers an area of about 20 hectares, is part of a SIC and ZPS area of 40 hectares and its management has been entrusted to the Noale WWF Cave Oasis Committee. It used to be a clay extraction area that got abandoned for several years. It was restored to create a new wild habitat that the local government declared a protected area (1, 2 and 4).

Maintenance and management of urban nature, Management and improved protection of rivers and other blue areas

Project objectives

The objectives of the project conducted in the area between 1998 and 2005 were: 1. Reduction of the contributions of Nitrogen and phosphorus at the Laguna of Venice; 2. Reducing the hydraulic risk, through reduction of the flow rate and the increase in volumes of water invasion during storms; 3. The increase in naturalistic and biodiversity value; 4. Improving the usability of the quarry area (4).

Implementation activities

The site become a protected natural oasis through a long and controversial process. It involved the Venice Province, the Municipality of Noale and the Dese-Sile Reclamation Consortium, but also associations and private citizens who, recognizing the high value, worked over the years in order to protect it. Thanks to their constant commitment, they blocked the project of turning the place into a landfill. Interventions in the area were: 1. Manufacturing of infrastructural support, derivation and return of the water flow; 2. Realization of a new internal waterway to the quarries; 3. Strengthening of the river margins to prevent damages due to flooding; 4. Realization of three new water basins. (4)

The WWF and the Noala Municipality are in charge of maintaining the area since 2005, after the last work of rehabilitation of a local river stream in the area was completed. The project is a result of a partnership between the local municipality, WWF and local groups of civilians (2 and 3).

Project implemented in response to ...

... an EU policy or strategy? Yes (The Oasis is part of a larger territory (about 40 hectares, including all former quarries) identified as a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT3250017) under the Habitats Directive 92/43 / EEC and Protected Area Special (SPA) under Directive 79/409 "Birds". This is why the area is part of the Natura 2000 network of the Veneto Region (1).)
... a national policy or strategy? Unknown
... a local policy or strategy? Yes (The area was declared a natural oasis thanks to local citizens initiatives born in Noale in the late 1970s: the "Committee for the Realization of a Wildlife Protection Oasis to Locate in Noale Caves". Thank to this initiative, the government decided to not build a landfill and let nature take over. An important project was then presented by the Consortium of Reclamation Dese Sile (now Acque Risorgive) and drafted in 1998, with the aim of creating a bio-fitodepuration area of the nutrients of the Rio Draganziolo. This project was carried out, completed and completed in 2005 (1). The project to recover the local river in the area was part of the Veneto Region in light of its Prevention Plan Pollution and rehabilitation Of the basin waters Hydrographic immediately Swirling in the Lagoon Of Venice - Piano Director 2000" (4).)
