“The Sintra Parks concluded the project of recovery of the English Garden, in the Park of Pena, that aimed to stop the advanced state of degradation of this area and to solve situations that represented a risk to the mobility and safety of the visitors.” (ref 1) The NBS includes planting trees to regrow the tree cover of the area. Project objectives

- The recovery of the English Garden grounds after degradation through time and the destruction of a large storm in 2013. - Ensuring the safe trajectory of visitors. - Rehabilitating the green covers of the garden. - Planting trees to regrow the tree cover of the area. (ref 1). - improve the accessibility conditions for the properties under its management and to constitute them as examples of good practices of accessible tourism and equality in the opportunity to access the Heritage Natural and built. (ref 2).

Implementation activities

2013- Storm that impacted and degraded the site (dozens of fallen trees, damaged pavements, ditches, and destroyed structures). (ref 1) 2015- The project begins and it includes the recovery of the road network, involving the execution and repair of pavements in order to make them more regular and safe; The recovery of the surface drainage system of rainwater; The repair of stairs, walls and benches and the valorization of the existing vegetation in the beds that compose the Garden. 2016-2017- control of woody invasive species (such as acacia and pitosporo-ondulado), arboriculture interventions (remove the dead trees and to execute pruning of cleaning the canopy and promotion of the correct development of the trees.) (ref 1)
