"Pending the creation of housing and new walks by 2020, the association Carton Plein and the EPA (Public Building Institution) of Saint-Etienne have created a temporary public space on the site known as "la Cartonnerie". A place for exchange and conviviality, the site hosts artistic installations, ephemeral installations and events. It is a laboratory conducive to imagining new ways of doing the city" (Ref. 1). The citizens also created shared gardens in this area called "Le Jardin Experimental"(Experimental garden) (Ref. 4).

Project objectives

-" A place of exchange and conviviality, the site hosts artistic installations, ephemeral arrangements and events. It is a laboratory conducive to imagining new ways of doing the city" (Ref. 1). -"Emerging a collaborative project-process to transform the viaduct and its surroundings in the short, medium and long term by drawing on all the dynamics of the sector (gardeners, cultural associations or parents, Institutions such as the Vittone elementary school and the multimedia library), but also by involving all the municipal services of the city that could intervene at given times on the sector in 2, 5, 10, 20 years and on various entrances: town planning , Culture, education, building, living environment, roads, green areas etc." (Ref. 5) -Place for citizens to share stories, knowledge and a research study for the urban living lab. (Ref. 3 and 4)

Implementation activities

-"A color-coded signage allows the visual delimitation of the garden space, new collective composting bins are ready to be filled, and finally, the construction of small specific elements will contribute to the creation of a biodiversity via an "insect hotel" " (Ref. 8) -"Neighbors pass and take part in the action: painting, weeding the garden, cutting plants to make up the broyat, cleaning the public space, transplanting a butterfly tree ..." (Ref. 9). A place for exchange and conviviality, the site hosts artistic installations, ephemeral installations and events.(Ref 1) -" On November 24, 2010 in Saint-Etienne, the Cartonnages Stéphanois site becomes a temporary public space, designed and hosted in several episodes by the CARTON PLEIN association. At the heart of an urban and city development project, this 2000m2 temporary public space is conducive to imagining new ways of doing the city, with light and mobile interventions. Create, get together, exchange, test, play, involve students, users, neighbors… so many stimulating perspectives for a living public space!" (Ref. 10). -Creation of insect hotel in 2017 (Ref. 8).

Details on the roles of the organisations involved in the project

-The EPA of Saint Etienne (Public urban development institution) initially developed the area (Ref. 1) -"On November 24, 2010 in Saint-Etienne, under the impetus of the EPASE , the Cartonnages Stéphanois site becomes a temporary public space. Conceived and animated in several episodes by the association CARTON PLEIN, it is now in municipal management and participates in a multidisciplinary action research on the city and the game" (Ref. 5). -EPASE is the Public Planning Establishment which is responsible for stimulating a new dynamic for the benefit of the living environment and businesses to participate in the attractiveness of the city and attract new inhabitants (Ref. 5). "The association "Carton Plein" was formed around the design of a temporary and experimental public space of 2,000 m2: "La Cartonnerie". Having become a playground for many actors (academics, developers, neighbors, professionals in the design of public spaces, associations, companies, etc.)" (Ref. 6). "This project is supported by EPASE since it is part of the project to develop the railway viaduct at Carnot." (Ref. 5). -"shared management of this public space between citizens with the green thumb and the technical services of the city which intervene regularly there for the cleaning and the maintenance of the green spaces."(Ref. 5) -The association Incredible Edibles took over the planters in 2016, though Carton Plein chose to become involved again in 2017 by setting up a project with high school students from the Montravel horticultural school and as speakers the designer Jean Sébastien Ponset and the graphic designer Emmanuelle Guyard. A project which made it possible to consolidate the garden and especially to reinstall a more operational composting point. The previous one had been demolished by the companies hired by the City to destroy the garages which had been installed under the railway viaduct" (Ref. 4). -Carton Plein is no longer in charge of the project and is focused on other projects: "To join the actors of 45 rue Etienne Boisson on the edge of the Cartonnerie, or the incredible edibles, collective compost, Typotopy ... which continue to animate the site from time to time, you can use facebook - the Cartonnerie page has been collectively taken up!" (Ref. 5) (as of September 7, 2020).
