This is a project financed by the EU LIFE Project on CO2 sequestration and reduction levels in the urban area of Rome. One of the initiatives involved an NBS, as RomaNatura took care of planting new trees over 2 hectares of land in the Valle dei Casali in the Municipio XV area (Ref. 1).
Overview
Nature-based solution
- Grey infrastructure featuring greens
- Alley or street trees and other street vegetation
- Parks and urban forests
- Large urban parks or forests
Key challenges
- Climate action for adaptation, resilience and mitigation (SDG 13)
- Climate change mitigation
- Environmental quality
- Air quality improvement
Focus
Creation of new green areas, Transformation of previously derelict areas
Project objectives
The aim of the project was to define an Action Plan for the City of Rome, which contributes concretely to the achievement of the objectives set out in the Kyoto Protocol within the timescale - on CO2 sequestration and reduction levels in the urban area of Rome (1).
Implementation activities
The ROMAPERKYOTO project achieved its main expected deliverable with the approval of its Plan for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) by the Municipal Council of Rome. The scientific partners (ENEA of Italy and ITT of
Ireland) carried out analysis and modelling work to define various scenarios
based on the different projected levels of GHG emissions in future years. The
main stakeholders involved in the GHG issues (electric power producers and
distributors, oil processing companies, public transport agencies, public
institutions, research institutes, and many others) were involved by the
beneficiary in an advisory group which was the main key to the success of the
project. The project implemented seven small-scale demonstration actions, including the
implementation of an urban forestry installation covering more than 10 ha (3).
Climate-focused activities
Climate change mitigation:
- Increase green urban nature for carbon storage (wetlands, tree cover)
Main beneficiaries
- Citizens or community groups
- Young people and children
Governance
Management set-up
- Co-governance with government and non-government actors
Type of initiating organisation
- Local government/municipality
Participatory approaches/ community involvement
- Dissemination of information and education
Details on the roles of the organisations involved in the project
This project envisaged the participation, as partner of the Province of Rome, the "RomaEnergia" Energy Agency, the Regional Institute "RomaNatura", ENEA, ATAC, and the Institute of Technology in Tallaght ( Ireland). RomaNatura was responsible for a pilot forestation operation of a public green area of 2 hectares falling within the R.N. Of the Valle dei Casali in the Town Hall XV (1 and 3)
