The city of Palermo has planned a series of interventions to regenerate the coastal area in the Southern part of the city (Bandita, Romagnolo and Acqua dei Corsari). The activities performed to reach this goal were the cleaning of the green areas which surround the coast and creation of playground zones for kids. In particular, the green areas were expanded with the plantation of typical plants of the Mediterranean area. This project was aiming to improve the condition of both water and the coast itself, to make it more attractive and accessible to everyone. (Ref.1.)

Project objectives

The city of Palermo started an intervention that aims at regenerating and improving the conditions of the coastal area, to promote tourism, marine protection and recreational areas. The goal of the project is part of an overall intervention planned by the municipality of Palermo to regenerate the coastal area. In particular, the green areas were expanded with the plantation of typical plants of the Mediterranean area in order to provide important services of mitigation from human impact, and the same time to make the area more accessible for residents and tourist. It is also a means to encourage economic activities on the coast (e.g. bars, restaurants) (Ref.2.)

Implementation activities

To realize the goals of improving accessibility and enhancing the tourism of the area, the seaside coast was cleaned and renewed with the plantation of Mediterranean vegetation, to improve the liveability of the zone. In addition, the presence of a new green area means more care of the coast itself, and this helps to prevent sea pollution from human garbage (Ref.2.)
