The Reconstruction of the Southern Bank of Schütt Island is the starting point of the regeneration of the Old City of Nurnberg. Within the project, the access to water and recreational functions of the river banks were improved. (1) The project was completed on an 1800 square meter large area, which includes open meadow areas, a 170-meter-long bank terrace, trees, and benches. (6) Public participation through co-planning and consultation was also involved in the planning process. (1)

Project objectives

Implementation activities

1. Participatory planning workshops with citizens were conducted and the final plan was approved. (1) 2. The riverbank was strengthened with the preservation of existing trees and new trees planted (1) 4. The 170m long paving and a terrace was installed (1, 5) 5. The height of the riverbank was decreased (2) 6. The Insel Schutt was regenerated with the highest possible density of green plants. Lawns, the plane trees, and poplars, dense horticultural shrubs with a high percentage of evergreen shrubs, interspersed with solitary shrubs were planted. (1) 7. Benches were installed (2) 8. A lawn for sunbathing and a wooden balcony protruding into the water were created and the eastern access was made wheelchair accessible. (5)

Details on the roles of the organisations involved in the project

The project was initiated by the local government, who commissioned the public service company SÖR to lead, plan and implement the project. Intensive public participation was also involved in the planning. The renovation work on the south bank of the island of Schütt cost around 350,000 euros, from which the state and the federal government paid almost 200,000 euros through urban development funds.
