The Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli) is a palace, museum, and historical tourist destination located in central Naples, southern Italy. In 2016, the rooftop gardens of the Palace were part of the project to renew the historical royal palace to reopen the green space on the top of the Palazzo. The external walls of the internal part have been covered by flowers and plants. In addition, new services have been provided, such as bar, restaurants, recreation areas, providing at the same time economic opportunities and new jobs. (Ref.1.)

Project objectives

The interventions were aiming at removing the causes that were threatening the actual state of the garden. The rooftop garden was regenerated with new plants and green areas, in order to promote the social and cultural importance of the historical building. (Ref.2.)

Implementation activities

After the first planning phase, the external walls were cleaned to give space to the new vertical flowers on the external part. Particular attention was given to the preservation of the historical parts of the Villa (Ref.3.)

The initiative was born after a public announcement on the EU official journal (OJ) offering funds for 18 million € to regenerate historical buildings. The intervention was implemented by the regional director for the Campania cultural heritage, which took care to plan and conduct the works for the whole intervention (Ref.1.)
