In 2010, rehabilitation works on the Huveaune riverbanks, in the city of Marseille, were carried out by volunteers from three associations: Rives & Cultures, Planète Sciences Méditerranée, and Hunamar. Work included clearing, revegetation, and maintenance of riverbanks (Ref. 1). Since this initiative took place, the l'Huveaune Watershed Union has been formed and taken steps to formalize the rehabilitation of the Huveaune riverbanks (Ref. 2, 3, and 4).

Project objectives

- Rehabilitation of the Huveaune riverbanks - "To enhance the natural heritage and biodiversity of the Huveaune but also to promote pedestrian paths along the river" (Ref. 1) - Cleaning of the river beds for better water flow (Ref. 1)

Implementation activities

-"In addition to suscribed to an insurance and get the authorization from the City of Marseille, the contacts made with the Huveaune inter-municipal syndicate and Mr. Choley allowed a first clearing of the site" "The project consisted of: - to finalize the clearing, - highlight the trees of the banks, - collect the dead wood, then gathered into a pile of sticks, - restore the circulation of water - and finally remove water from many shopping carts" (Ref. 1) "Around twenty volunteer volunteers took part in this first mini-site thanks to the help of three associations: Rives & Cultures, Planète Sciences méditerranée and also Hunamar" (Ref. 1)

Details on the roles of the organisations involved in the project

- Inhabitants themselves created this association to protect the riverbanks: "Rives et Cultures, an association of inhabitants, wishes to contribute to the cultural development of the districts of the Greater East of Marseille, notably by enhancing the Huveaune, the natural and cultural heritage emblematic of these neighborhoods" (Ref. 1) -"Rives & Cultures" in partnership with "Planète Sciences Méditerranée" (both non-profit organizations) are initiating this rehabilitation of the riverbanks. (Ref. 1). The City has plans towards social cohesion and urban development in general but as the municipality supported this project :"with the support of the DRJS Social Cohesion, the Syndicat Intercommunal de l'Huveaune and the elected officials and the city of Marseille (CUCS Vallée de l'Huveaune)" (Ref. 1).
