The vertical garden is 600 m2 and is an intervention implemented in Pericon Plaza in the old city of Malaga. The garden is placed above a large metal mural with inspirational words for visitors to contemplate. The garden and metal mural were built on the wall-remains of a former house that stood in the spot but was in disrepair. (Ref 1)

Project objectives

This intervention is part of a larger regional urban regeneration initiative, called the Urban Initiative, which includes the following objectives (Ref 2): 1. Integration of urban activities with economic and social activities, with the goal of improving the urban environment and quality of life of citizens. 2. Exchange of knowledge and experiences among all partner cities of the Program. 3. Encourage a novel model of comprehensive management of cooperation between different Areas and services of the administration. 4. Adjust investments within a certain timeframe and complying with requirements. 5. Encourage new forms of citizen participation with co-responsibility in the Actions between administrations and society. 6. Continuity and follow up of the actions undertaken.

Implementation activities

2001-2005- Phase 1, of Historic City Center rehabilitation project, in 2005 the vertical garden and accompanying mural were completed. 2007- 2013- Phase 2, Community center (Ludoteca) is built across the vertical garden and the square rehabilitation is completed in 2013. (ref 2)
