Karlsruhe, Germany
City population: 287412
Duration: 2014 – 2016
Implementation status: Completed and archived or cancelled
Scale: Sub-microscale: Street scale (including buildings)
Project area: unknown
Type of area: Building
Last updated: October 2021

The intervention was supposed to be implemented by the project group "Green Facades" consisting of the urban initiative "SchwarmFarm", the research project Quartier Zukunft and citizen volunteers. Greening facades in the Oststadt district of Karlsruhe with hops (climbing plant) to contribute to the cooling of the urban microclimate was their primary goal. Additionally, the harvested hops were envisioned to be used by local breweries for brewing (Ref. 1) Although the project group dedicated to the project was cancelled, there are plans to continue the project in private. (Ref. 2) The leaders of the project have cancelled it, but it may still be implemented privately in a different form. (Ref. 2)

Focus

Creation of new green areas

Project objectives

- Using and demonstrating the multiple benefits of greened surface areas in densely built urban spaces: cooling effect, binding particulate matter, improving air quality, absorbing rainwater, improving aesthetics, improving thermal insulation in winter (which reduces energy consumption and thereby CO2 emissions) (Ref. 1) - Creating economic benefits with using the harvested hops for brewing processes in local breweries (Ref. 1) - Exploring the benefits and barriers of facades greening by engaging landlords and house owners in discussions and listening to their concerns (Ref. 1) - Making the Oststadt district more liveable. (Ref. 1) - Supporting citizen engagement, including taking part in the research project. (Ref. 1) - Supporting research about green facades (Ref. 2)

Implementation activities

The Quartier Zukunft research and development project of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology took up the implementation of the project. The project group “Green Facades” was created by them to implement the transformation of suitable house walls into green facades. The “Green Facades” project group found several locations in the city district where initial attempts were taking place. (Ref. 2) Due to conflicts concerning objectives, lack of coordination, communication and information exchange, the project was cancelled. (Ref. 6)

Climate-focused activities

Climate change adaptation:

  • Increase or improve urban vegetation cover to help reduce outdoor temperature
  • Implement green walls or roofs to lower indoor temperature and provide insulation

Details on the roles of the organisations involved in the project

A group of citizens conceptualized and initiated the project in collaboration with scientists of the project "Quartier Zukunft" and the urban initiative "ShwarmFarm". (Ref. 1 and 2).
