The 100-hectare site that is situates in the socially disadvantaged neighbourhood and river island called Wilhelmsburg was designed for the IGS 2013 (International Garden Show) and was opened to the citizens of Hamburg in 2014. On the 9-hectare large area that was a former brownfield site, mostly free or inexpensive outdoor leisure facilities were planned. The new park, named “Island Park” aims to attract people of all ages to do sport, including recreational and professional sports outdoor. Among others, the park is equipped with a high-rope course, a climbing wall, a canoeing canal a running track, a boules pitch and a garden for meditating (Reference 1, 2). Project objectives

General goals: - the aim of the IGS - together with the IBS (International Building Show that the city hosted in the same time - was to socially and economically redevelop the stigmatized neighbourhood. (Reference 5) - implementing a pilot project as an example of a modern sport park of the 21st century. The main aim of this is to adapt to changing urban lifestyles characterized by stress and sedentary jobs, which increase the demand for independent self-organized sport with the long-term goal of creating a mobile, health-conscious and international city. (Reference 1) - turning the park created for the Garden Show and the Building Show into a “Volkspark”, that is a park for the public. (Reference 2) Specific goals: - promote exercise and attract young people and children to the park - promote a healthy lifestyle for all age groups in the park (Reference 1) - implementing cheap and free sport facilities, thematic gardens and playgrounds. - providing additional services, such as workshops and hands-on activities for people who want to experience a sport under expert guidance. (Reference 3)

Implementation activities

The park was created in an approximately 100-hectare large area. Since 14 October 2013, it is accessible for the public. A total of 200 trees were planted, (Reference 2, 3) and 64 smaller parks were created and maintained after the show ended (Reference 2, 3). Cheap and free sport facilities, thematic gardens and playgrounds were implemented. (Reference 1) For the duration of the Garden Show, a monorail drove through the approximately 100-hectare garden exhibition area on a 3.4 km long, elevated circuit (rail height 4 to 6 meters). The trains, reached a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour, were not maintained after the IGS. An indoor swimming pool with a 25-meter pool, diving board and children's area was also created.
