The Fechenheimer Mainbogen is the largest undeveloped floodplain area in Frankfurt am Main and a special recreational area in the Frankfurt Green Belt Internal link. Today, the Main Arch is mainly used for agriculture, but still contains numerous relics of a typical floodplain landscape, such as smaller floodplain trees, meadows and wet bank areas. Since 2015, the curve of the Main has been transformed back into a near-natural meadow landscape with water, alluvial forests and meadows in several steps. Animals and plants are given new valuable habitats and places of retreat, and people are given attractive recreational spaces in nature (10).

Focus

Maintenance and management of urban nature, Management and improved protection of rivers and other blue areas

Project objectives

1. Structural improvement of the floodplain of the river Main (1); 2. Creation of habitat for aquatic plants and species (1); 3. Improving the recreational function of the area for Frankfurt citizens (1); 4. Creation better conditions for agriculture (1); 5. Protection of agricultural areas from flooding (1).

Implementation activities

The project proposed 39 individual measures on the following areas: - Reinforcement of the river banks(1) - Three additional oxbow ponds were created with 5000 square meter watersurface (1) - Relocation of some protected species, such as the yellow meadows (1) - Deconstruction of a dam and implementation of a backwater system (1) - Construction of a 1,200 meter long three-meter-wide towpath with a light-colored asphalt surface (1) - Clearance of the construction site and restoration of the construction roads and storage areas as a meadow (1) - Reorganisation of land with the placing of contiguous arable and meadow areas are created in the higher areas.
