This NBS was implemented in 2012 in order to conserve the biodiversity in the natural protected area of the Cilieni Pond and in order to ensure the sustainable development of protected species. The Pond was declared a protected area and covers 47 hectares. First an evaluation plan of the current situation was created, followed by a management plan. Inventory of the flora and fauna was conducted and protection methods were implemented: cleaning the area and educating the citizens that have a daily contact with the pond. (1)
Overview
Nature-based solution
- Blue infrastructure
- Lakes/ponds
- In-land wetlands, peatlands, swamps, and moors
Key challenges
- Green space, habitats and biodiversity (SDG 15)
- Habitat and biodiversity conservation
- Green space creation and/or management
- Water management (SDG 6)
- Flood protection
- Improvements to water quality
- Cultural heritage and cultural diversity
- Preservation of natural heritage
Focus
Management and improved protection of rivers and other blue areas, Knowledge creation and awareness raising, Improved governance of green or blue areas
Project objectives
1. Sub-surface water flow minimizes pollutant and sediment contamination of waterways, and gives ample opportunity for plants and microbes to take up nutrients;
2. Strict protection provides benefits in terms of carbon storing and recreation;
3. Natural areas provide controls for useful educational and cultural information important in the study of science and local history;
4. Effective at improving water quality they have been referred to as the “kidneys” of a watershed. (2,3).
Implementation activities
- Inventory of species from Protected Natural Area "Cilieni Pond- Bailesti", in order to conserve them started in 2012.
- Species mapping, area mapping and the creation of a database in GIS / BIMS format including distribution maps of species of national importance within the Protected Natural Area "Balti Cilieni - Bailesti
- Protection methods were also implemented: cleaning the area and educating the citizens that have a daily contact with the pond. - Information and awareness raising activities targeted both the local population as well as of the stakeholders regarding the importance of preserving the biodiversity in the protected natural area "Cilieni Pond-Bailest (1) (1)
