Focus Park is a large shopping mall with green terraces (900 m2) and green walls in the city of Bydgoszcz. The project serves marketing purposes – the green areas outside the mall are visible from various vantage points. Due to the selection of pollution resistant plants and installation of an automatic irrigation system the project also involves water retention and supports local biodiversity and good air quality [1].

Focus

Creation of new green areas

Project objectives

1) marketing and promotion; 2) water retention – rainwater is used for the automatic irrigation system of the roof; 3) decreasing local pollution levels and improving biodiversity (the roofs and walls are composed of pollution-resistant plants) [1].

Implementation activities

1) Building green roof and terraces on the total area of 900 m2 using a 40cm thick substrate; 2) Installation of an automatic irrigation system with built-in emitters for irrigation of shrubs compensating for a pressure of 2.2 litres and a distance of 40 cm. The fixed irrigation system consists of: water source, underground pipeline network, sprinklers and control automatics (controller, rain sensor, solenoid valves); 3) Planting plants and spreading grass from a roll. The composition of the bushes complements the planting of grass in large unidirectional patches of varying colour and surface (from grey through green to brown). 4) Planting species resistant to pollution and resistant to harsh habitat and urban conditions. Planting yews, magnolias, rhododendrons, and holly [1].
