Since it's founding in 2005, the association "Ermekeilinitiative e. V." has been aiming at the transformation of the Ermekeil quarter, a former military base to a communal, generation-wide and intercultural space with diverse ecological and sustainable use. Since the Federal Office for Defense Administration moved out in 2013, the territory was released for interim use. Together with residents and communities, the association turned the territory into a lively, green and mixed neighbourhood with several initiatives taking place in parallel. The community garden project was one of them (1). The interim use of the area ended in 2016, some of the buildings of the former military base have been sold on the real estate market. This resulted in the termination of most of the Association's initiatives in the area including the removal of the 100 raised beds of the community garden. Parts of the community garden was relocated to a different part of the quarter, however, since 2018 there is no information on the current working and management of the community garden (2,6).

Project objectives

- Create a thriving, green and mixed neighbourhood through the community urban garden and other activities in the quarter that fosters citizen participation and community building (1,5). - Provide a place for environmental and sustainability learning for local residents (2). - Use the garden as a means to promote social and cultural integration and intergenerational collaboration - few of the founding organisation's main goals (1). - Since the former military base also hosts a refugee camp, one of the project goals is social integration through joint gardening (5). - Encourage resource-friendly use of substances and materials. - Climate mitigation through minimizing additional CO2 emissions of the Ermekeil quarter. - Improvement of the micro-climate in the district, improving quality of life and securing space for plants and animals (habitats) (5).

Implementation activities

The garden was the first initiative implemented in the quarter, followed by other projects, such as diverse culture and arts events, the implementation of refugee accommodation, or a repair cafe. With the aim of transforming sealed surfaces which are not allowed to be removed into green spaces, 100 mobile vegetable and flower beds were erected in the quarter. In communal work with interested citizens and residents, the beds were first built out of pallets and then seeded with flowers, vegetables, to be communally harvested (2). In the initial project concept, several activities are mentioned: de-sealing of areas, greening of the roofs and facades for rainwater to be better absorbed, planting of trees to reduce heat-island effect, implementation of beehives (5).

The Ermekeilinitiative e.V Association has strategically had been planning for and initiated the interim use of the Ermekeil barracks before its new function was defined and was fighting to stay within the premises through negotiations with the city of Bonn and other bodies involved. As a civil society-oriented organization, the association aimed at encouraging the active involvement and participation of citizens and neighbours. From the identification of possible uses to the actual implementation of the greening project, residents were actively involved at all stages (1,3, 5).
