Last updated: April 2022

This is a tree-planting initiative for the creation of a new forested area in the Parco Nord of Bologna. During the project lifetime (originally planned from2016-2018), a total of 4.000 new trees will be planted. The trees will be 2-2,5 meters high to give the appearance of a forested area inside the city (1). As of 2019, the implementation of the forest is on hold and it depends on the construction of the so-called "Passante di Bologna", namely a highway with 3 high-speed routes. If the highway is approved (and there is enough funding) then the forest can also be implemented (6).

Focus

Creation of new green areas

Project objectives

The objectives of this NBS are the planting of new trees in order to redesign the entire area of the park and the creation of an area for environmental education (1). The project aims at planting a total of 4.000 new trees on an area of 13 hectares. The intention is to recreate the immediate idea of a new forest, so no newborn trees will be used, but only trees that are already at least 2 meters high (1). Overall, the surface of the intervention exceeds 11 ha and the permeable surface will go from 45% to over 60% (2). The number of trees: the current number is 195, so a total of 4.195 trees will be located in the park by the end of the project (1).

Implementation activities

1. A new forest will be planted next to the axis of the tangenziale; 2. The peri-fluvial belt along the route of the "Deserted Savena" drain will be recovered and expanded; 3. The arbors that surround the arena will be covered by mainly shrubby species (1).
