The educational project of a roof-top garden was integrated in the public primary school “Ferran Sunyer”, in the neighborhood of Sant Antoni, Barcelona. The project has motivated pupils to enter the world of urban horticulture, creating synergies with other lectures and has been well received by teachers and parents. This initiative aims to recover nature-appreciation values in children through the maintenance of a rooftop garden and orchard (Ref. 1). The rooftop school orchard has been featured in many videos in international media (Ref. 5).

Project objectives
This educational proposal seeks to recover among children values that are important and are being lost. As for example, the value of food, contact with nature, caring for the environment and animals, ecology, recycling of materials and above all, work together to care for and collect their own organic vegetables from the urban garden of the school (ref 1).
- Naturalise green areas, increase the amount of native flora and foster biodiversity in the city’s tree pits, in order to create natural habitats that will help to combat pests and infestations using biological means (Ref. 2)
Implementation activities
- Create a rooftop garden (Ref 1)
- Helping to plant the city's tree pits (Ref. 2)
- The groups continue to increase and do different jobs in the garden. They also take advantage of this topic to work on other content: they make cards of the different plants, write their characteristics, make explanatory posters, etc. (Ref. 3)
