The initiative is comprised of a project to recover the coastal line of Alicante, from El Campello to Elx (approx. 21 km long). The Municipality called an ideas' competition with the aim of developing a sustainable coastal corridor project that includes an intervention on the entire Alicante coastline and generates a continuous itinerary integrated into the landscape with new places of opportunity for the residents of the city (Ref. 7). The two-stage competition sought proposals for a new ‘coastal passage’ featuring the creation of new multi-purpose public spaces promoting biodiversity and accessibility (Ref 13). The winner was announced on the beginning of 2019 and the Municipality planned to start the development of the first 2 parts of the project. The winning project of the competition bears the slogan "My connected archipelago" and is the work of the Grupo Aranea and Subarquitectura studios from Alicante (Ref 14), a project that considers ecological and sustainable principles (Ref. 9).

Project objectives

-"The purpose of the coastal passage shall be to provide the city with a public space of environmental and material quality in which they have room, and to facilitate leisure, sports and cultural activities; and secondly, to generate connectivity along the coast, and from this with the urban territory" (Ref. 1) -"The objective of the competition is to redefine, from a global vision of the coastal territory, the relationship between Alicante and the sea and to value and connect with each other and with the city, the tourist, environmental, landscape, cultural and urban resources of the coastal edge in the framework of sustainability and accessibility." (Ref. 1) - "Minimize carbon footprint and energy consumption in the materials and construction, use and maintenance processes." (Ref. 1) -Ensure sustainable mobility along the entire passage as the main option for travel, by incorporating a continuous cycle route, protected, integrated and contiguous to the passage, sharing"(uploaded doc, 54) - "aims to enhance local safety and sustainability by integrating new interventions into existing waterfront infrastructure." (Ref 13) -"New viewpoints and observation platforms will boost contact with nature and enhance the beach experience while consistent landscaping styles and diverse public spaces will integrate the new urban passages with existing areas, which will also be improved." (Ref 13) "A new coastal corridor would affect not only the landscape and urbanism of the city, but it would also introduce improvements in the economy, environment, mobility, and of course, tourism, which is our main industry, and very related with the sea and the climate." (Ref 13) "Our vision is a sustainable project, that offers an iconic and continuous image for the waterfront, which offers viewpoints, places to touch, feel and experience the sea, and spots to create spaces where the corridor is a place to stay, with facilities for sports, leisure, culture… and not only a place to pass through. It should be a path to join all the things happening in the waterfront of the city, and also to create new ones. The architectural quality is fundamental to provide a solution that will create the identity of a city for the next decades. " (Ref 13) winning project: "The design contemplates the structuring of the Paseo Litoral through different "islands" connected to each other through what is conceived as an "ecological corridor" with the aim of connecting "people with the landscape and landscapes with each other, the water with the land and water with the people ”, also understanding that“ the true potential of the coastal corridor is its quality as a public-natural space and as a space for coexistence ”." (Ref 14)

Implementation activities

The interventions to be proposed are as followed (Ref: uploaded document "Technical clauses",page 27): -CREATION OF NATURAL PASSAGE - CONSERVATION AND ECOLOGIC RESTORATION - Implementation of the architectural elements to reduce the traffic noise and urban noise on the passage.(uploaded doc) -- Ensure the compatibility and safety of the route in relation to the networks and conduits of evacuation of rainwater, especially in the episodes of torrential rains (uploaded doc) The Programme listed these following requirements (Ref: Uploaded document "Technical clauses", page 54): -Sustainability and climate change -Biodiversity - Creation of a Littoral Corridor along the seafront of the city of Alicante, so that it connects its beaches with the urban area and creates a "coexistence" space (ref. 6) - the project is conceived as an ecological corridor with the objective "of connecting people with the landscape and landscapes with each other, water with land and water with people, and understanding that the true potential of the coastal corridor is its quality as a public-natural space and as a space for coexistence (Ref. 6) - Transformation of Costablanca avenue into a promenade, keeping the two lanes on the west side for traffic and allocating the other two to create a public space for the pedestrian with a bicycle lane that connects to the sea through small interventions (Ref. 6) - pedestrian connection of all sections of the coast and generation of a continuous itinerary, integrated into the environment, respectful of the landscape and the environment and allowing new opportunities to be generated (Ref. 6) -"The project that has been imposed, according to its authors, highlights the recovery of Cabo de las Huertas as the most special "island" of the city of Alicante due to its history and scenic importance, while contemplating the transformation of Costa Blanca Avenue on a walk, keeping the two lanes on the west side for traffic and allocating the other two to generate a public space for pedestrians, including a bike lane, that connects with the sea through small interventions, " (Ref 14)
